CID seeks Interpol aid to probe Lankan “ Boat people”

( October 20, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The CID is to commence investigations into the group of Sri Lankans who have been detained in Indonesia and Canada as illegal immigrants with the assistance of Interpol. The Illegal Immigrants Prevention Unit of the CID said that it had sought information in that regard from the Indonesian and Canadian police through Interpol.

Meanwhile, the CID noted that it had received information to suggest that Sri Lankan nationals who travelled to Indonesia and Thailand legally had attempted to illegally migrate to Australia by boat.

The CID suspects that a group of Sri Lankan racketeers who are there at present have linked up with international traffickers.

At present, 265 nationals have been detained in Indonesia while 76 nationals have been detained in Canada.
