Bullying as politics

Editorial comment by our political editor

(July 09, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Not long ago Commissioner for Elections in Sri Lanka was bullied into submission. GOSL is now trying the same tactic with the UN. The attempt now is to bully the UN to give up the panel that Secretary General has appointed to advice him on possible war crimes. Stop all investigations is the message.

A cabinet minister has undertaken a hunger strike unto death for this purpose with the full blessing of the government. Defense secretary , who is seen as one of the possible culprits of such crimes is actively involved in preventing police from taking any action against this campaign.

There is nothing new in such style of politics. It is the same politics that has put the man who dared to contest the president in last presidential elections behind bar. It is same bullying that is going on against the Supreme Court and Appeals courts.

17 Amendment to the constitution was bullied out of operation with whole lot of false propaganda. Now, some me amendments are also on the way, to remove all limits on executive president.

This political leadership knows no other style.

It will bully its way so long as people can take such bullying.
