“I know India, Pakistan and all our neighbours and International community including US, UK and other international bodies are well aware of the situation in Sri Lanka. They understand that the leadership is not functioning in a democratic manner and is going worse further. This arrogant behaviour is a threat to the region and as well as is a threat to global peace.”

(October 03, Colombo, Sri Lnaka Guardian) The day after the President Mahendra Percy Rajapakse returned with his entourage of 130 delegates after addressing the United Nation’s General Assembly, he presided over all expected vindictive and controversial decision against his top political opponent General Sarath Fonseka - the man who led the victory over the LTTE last year.

General Fonseka has been taken to the prison pending arrangements to serve a rigorous punishment for 30 months. The President shamelessly followed the decision of the subservient Military Court appointed by him with the junior military officials of the General that court-marshalled him in a haphazard Kangaroo Court type hearing.

“ We all know that the Court Martial never followed the rules in presiding, hearing and hastily and vindictively delivering the sentence. Even it is against the Military Act for junior officials to preside over judgement against a senior General. We all know, this court martial is none other than a politically motivated vindictive mission of the President against my husband’ said Mrs. Anoma Fonseka, on the day after visiting her husband in Welikada prison.

“I was not surprised that they will go to this extent, because I knew this is what they wanted to do from the beginning. They know that the General is a political threat to the President and they can’t fight with him politically because people are with him. That’s why they are manipulating everything including abusing the law as well. In this contest of the honesty, justice is far away from the people of Sri Lanka and we must now start to fight to restore justice for all Sri Lankans,” Anoma further said.

According to Anoma, “Kidnapping the General whilst engaging in democratic politics and imprisoning him in the Navy Headquarters until he was court marshalled and vindictively upholding the verdict of the political military court is not something a broadminded politician will do. This is very degrading and is what we all have to face today as our common challenge.

There is no difference, being Sinhalase, Muslims or Tamils - all are facing the heavy-handedness of the state daily. The situation is that the regime is manipulating everything for its own selfish benefits. We all must come forward now honestly without the fear of retribution and we must carryout our democratic agitation against this ever progressing anti-democratic monarchic type of formation.”

When Sri Lanka Guardian asked about her views on the international governments she said, “I know India, Pakistan and all our neighbours and International community including US, UK and other international bodies are well aware of the situation in Sri Lanka. They understand that the leadership is not functioning in a democratic manner and is going worse further. This arrogant behaviour is a threat to the region and as well as is a threat to global peace.”

According to the Constitution, a member of parliament who is imprisoned for two years cannot contest election for seven years. Mrs. Fonseka understood the objective of the government to imprison the General but she frankly said that she has not gone into constitutional or legal details on this matter. But “I will do my best to continue the General’s political mission which is aimed to restore democracy in the country. Even if they need me to take forward his mission, I am prepared to enter the parliament to uphold General’s mission,” she concluded. She thanked all the opposition parties and the people in general for their kind support. Tell a Friend
