Fedrica cross questioned during the hearing of white flag case

(October 11, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The case pertaining to the alleged statement made by the Leader of the Democratic National Alliance Sarath Fonseka to the Sunday Leader newspaper regarding the white flag incident was taken up for hearing before a 3 member Bench Panel today.

Editor of the Sunday Leader newspaper, Fedrica Janz giving evidence before courts stated that a huge controversy unfolded after the relevant report was published on the 13th of December 2009.

She stated that she had a discussion with the former Army Commander the following day and stated that a clarification regarding the statement was published on the 20th of December. Fedrica Janz also stated that there was no contact with the Former Army Commander thereafter.

However, she stated that the JVP held protests against her, and stated that MP’s Anura Kumara and Mangala Samaraweera influenced her on some occasions. She stated that they requested her to publish an article correcting the previous one since the defendant had denied the relevant statement.

However, Fedrica Janz stated that since he definitely made the statement she did not make a correction.She also stated that through the “Her Story” column on 3rd January 2010 she had stated that the defendant should take responsibility for the statement.

However, the attorney appearing on behalf of the defendant cross questioned Fedrica Janz.

Accordingly, Attorney at law Nalin Ladduwahetti questioned as to whether cases have been filed in courts against her for publishing false reports.

He also questioned as to whether she had made a promise to courts stating that she would not publish articles against Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakse, and whether she had violated that promise as well.
She accepted the facts put forward by the attorney.

Deputy Solicitor General Navarathna Bandara appearing on behalf of the prosecutor queried from Fedrica Janz as to whether legal action was filed against the article which was denied by the defendant.

However, she stated that no such legal action was taken against the Sunday Leader newspaper.The case was postponed for tommorrow. Tell a Friend
