Our time Heroes – Mother and son

by Harshi Perera

(January 08, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) "Vidu", is the latest production by controversial film director Ashoka Handagama.

Vidu, is categorized as a children’s movie. In the film advertisement Vidu is depicted as a child hero. It also advices that every child must see it.

No doubt that the film should be seen by every child, but in my opinion this children’s film is more suitable for adults. Especially every Principal and every Teacher must see it.

[STORY: Vidu is a child who eagerly wants to go to school as other children of his age, but unfortunately is deprived of that right for reasons beyond his control. He does not have a legitimate father. Mother earns only few bucks hardly sufficient to feed him. They live in an isolated house in a coastal tourist-town. Other than the knowledge of English acquired by talking to tourists, Vidu does not have any form of formal primary education. One day a tourist throws Vidu a dollar note, thinking as if Vidu is a beggar. “Why do you give me money? What did I do to you to earn this money?” Vidu asks “What a little boy like you who hasn’t even gone to a school can do to earn a dollar from me?” The tourist asks in return. Vidu takes this question as an insult and as a challenge. He is determined to add a value to his life which is not worth of a dollar now. The story of the film is his attempt to make his dream a reality.]

The film talks about human values, child rights, specially the right to education, dignity and equality.

It is common knowledge and an accepted fact that a majority of school principals are political stooges who do not have a back bone. These principals who try their best to cover up their inabilities and corrupt ways by erecting Buddha Statues, blaring Pirith and Bana using loud speakers and preaching on culture and morality.

This film is a challenge to such persons. The principals and teachers who see this film should stand for principles and they can learn a lot of things from these children.

Not only Vidu but also the mother of Vidu shines as a hero.

Asoka Handagama does not fail to challenge his audience.
