Paramilitary leader in the left and
Major General Hathrusinghe on the further right

(March 27, Jaffna, Sri Lanka Guardian) In responding to the wide ranging criminal activities in the military controlled Tamil dominated northern province, the Jaffna army commander Major General Mahinda Hathrusighe has accused that ‘some political leaders are involved in creating disturbance amongst people’ in the north.

Without being specific about the political leaderships and dealing with the root causes of the anti-social activities, the general comment of the General is a threat to the freedom of speech of the people in the northern Sri Lanka.

His accusation relates to politicians taking up and campaigning on widespread criminal activities in the northern region. Politically conscious General has further said the campaign of the politicians is tarnishing the image of Sri Lanka internationally.

Whilst making his general political comment, the General has also said that investigations have found political connections to the criminal activities in the north. He had said that those accused will be brought before court law and sentenced.

The very same General in the past accused the government minister Douglas Devananda’s paramilitary group for abductions and disappearances whilst giving military cover to the very same group engaged in the wide ranging anti-social and criminal activities beyond abductions and disappearances.
