Our Mahinda “Chinthana” Rajapaksa ayya and His Lovely Merry Men

The JVP has asked a minister in President Rajapakse’s jumbo cabinet to shut his big mouth
and for that the JVP must be applauded. This man’s tone and substance and above all his language are most unbecoming of a minister. It is sad the country has produced politicians and ministers of his calibre.

We can well imagine what people outside this country must be thinking of the President to make him a spokesman for the government.

Recently he spoke on TV and said he was recommending the Indian system of government and referred to the people of India (from the president downwards to the man on the street) in a manner most unbecoming of a minister.

This country as a whole has the right to demand that he appears on TV again and withdraws all the ignominy heaped on the Indians as they are the people of a neighbouring and friendly country. Whether he is from Katana or Timbuktu he has no business to insult a neighbouring country with which Sri Lanka has cordial relations.

In the days of the Legislative Council, every single Ceylonese who sat in the legislature was a well-bred gentleman endowed with refinement and dignity and contributed in no small way to uphold the dignity and decorum of the House, so much so their British counterparts held them in the highest esteem. Their eloquence was admired by the British.

All of them in the legislature whether they were Sinhalese, Tamils or Burghers, excelled in the English language and their fluency of the King’s language was greatly appreciated by the British. But sadly the government of Mahinda Rajapakse has men who are incapable of conducting themselves in and outside parliament as members of an august body.

Common sense, if not basic intelligence, should prompt President Rajapakse, to keep such people as far away as possible from exposure to the general public. They should only be seen and not heard. Their mouths are like cesspits which can only produce a dirty stench that pollutes the whole environment. when opened. The politicians the President has picked to defend the government are a discredited lot who do not command the respect of the masses. Gone are the days when the people listened to them with pin drop silence. Today, every time they open their mouths, President Rajapakse loses a fair number of voters who brought him to power.

Recently, some of the crossers-over from the UNP have joined the ‘carol cart’ appearing on television and singing the praises of the very party they condemned while in the UNP just a few months ago. It is a well-known fact that these crossers-over are at the tail end of their careers as parliamentarians, because they have ceased to have any clout with the people. When the time comes, not even their relatives will vote for them! Three of the high jumpers who have been picked to sing the praises of the President and his government were at one stage the most vociferous critics of Mahinda and his government. Will any man or woman who has anything called sanity believe a word of what they now say? The whole country knows that they crossed over to feather their own nests. Every time they appear on TV some people switch to another channel or listen with disbelief and utter disgust. These turncoats are doing more damage than any good for the government.

A glowing example to emulate for the likes of these would be Mangala and Sripathi. They are today the toast of the nation and the damage that they would do to Mahinda and his merry men will be devastating. They came to the forefront at a time when people were waiting for something dramatic to take place in the political field.

Sri Lanka is in the throes of disaster. The economy is being hammered out of shape and out of sight. This country is suffering from all types of disasters, one after the other — the tsunami, cyclones, floods, earthslips, murder, rape, abductions and corruption. There are an unprecedented number of refugees, widows, widowers and orphans.

The Buddhist clergy who should be preaching the dhamma are beating war drums and insisting on the war continuing which will result in many deaths and suffering. There will be more and more deaths and more disabled people. The men and women including Mangala and Sripathi who brought this government to power are answerable for the absolute chaos we face now and the damage perpetrated on the future generations!
