Former JDCSI treasurer Jeyarajan must submit his books

On inquiries, I have been told that the Trustees of the Jaffna College Funds in the US are acting as if they are a law unto themselves, ignoring that this is a fiduciary trust that was launched at the request of the founders of Jaffna College who were Sri Lankan citizens and not the American Ceylon Mission, and the beneficiary is solely Jaffna College charged with educational projects for the people of the Jaffna District.

To: The Rt Rev Dr Daniel S Thiagarajah
Bishop in Jaffna
Vaddukoddai N.P,Sri Lanka

My dear Bishop:

I understand the former treasurer of the JDCSI and a member of the staff of Jaffna College, Mr Annappah Jeyarajan has been invited by the Trustees of Jaffna College Funds in the US to represent either Jaffna College or the JDCSI or both at their forthcoming annual meeting in Boston, Mass, US.

Mr Jeyarajan is no more the treasurer of the JDCSI and I understand he has not even handed over the records and audited accounts and has in the meantime joined a rebel group and is actively engaged in working against the JDCSI. His failure to hand over the accounts books and records amounts to a serious crime. This is a matter for the police.

Furthermore, he does not enjoy the status at Jaffna College to represent this institution in any form that involves the school's policy and finances.

If he has indeed been invited, then there is something terrible wrong happening and this needs to be rectified. It is the Jaffna College Board of Directors and the EXCO of the JDCSI that should handle these matters. Or is there a force in the US that is acting contrary to accepted norms and principles in this respect?

On inquiries, I have been told that the Trustees of the Jaffna College Funds in the US are acting as if they are a law unto themselves, ignoring that this is a fiduciary trust that was launched at the request of the founders of Jaffna College who were Sri Lankan citizens and not the American Ceylon Mission, and the beneficiary is solely Jaffna College charged with educational projects for the people of the Jaffna District.

As for the Wider Churches Ministries (WCM) of the United Church of Christ (UCC), the successors to the United Church Board for World Mission (UCBWM), who were associated with the American Ceylon Mission before it became part of the JDCSI, it appears this organization still is of the belief that the JDCSI and ACM are something like colonial outposts of this American missionary organization and is controlled and directed by them.

Either its belief is relic or they are a relic themselves slumbering in the past; in the distant past.

I am sounding this deep concern to you and sharing it with folks, most of whom have expressed their feelings that the Trustees of Jaffna College funds in particular and the WCM of the UCC should be told quite categorically that they have got to come to grips with realities; the sooner the better.

The immediate responsibility in your hands is to demand that Mr Jeyarajan submits his books and properly audited accounts without any delay, failing which, the police should be called and the Trustees of the Jaffna College Funds clearly impressed that he cannot be invited to attend their meeting in Boston. Even if he submits the accounts, he cannot in any way represent either Jaffna College or the JDCSI in any part of the world at any time.

Please be kind enough to forward this communication to the Embassy of the United States in Colombo.

Yours sincerely,

Victor Karunairajan
