TNA vows colonizing in East

Pro- LTTE the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Parliamentarian R. Sampanthan has accused the government of attempting to colonize the east with Sinhalese, on the pretext of developing the province.

Participating in the debate on the north and the east in Parliament today (September 05th), Sampanthan said reconstruction, rehabilitation as well as resettlement activities undertaken by the government are unsatisfactory.

Responding to the accusation, Minister Karu Jayasuriya stressed that the government was not involved in an exercise to colonize the east with Sinhalese.

UNP MP Sarath Ranawaka, joining the debate, noted that despite government claims, power cannot be devolved within a unitary state.

"Power can be decentralized within a unitary state. If devolving power was possible, the late president J.R. Jayewardene would have done it. That is why he introduced the provincial council system," Ranawaka added.
