Anuradhapura Airbase under LTTE Air and Ground Attacks (Update)

(October,22, Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka Guardian) The Air Wing and Ground cadres of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam launched air and ground attacks on Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) base at Anuradhapura at around 3.20am in the morning today (22 October). A group of LTTE cadres infiltrated base premises and initiated a surprise attack on SLAF personnel on guard. Meanwhile an aircraft belonging to the LTTE dropped at least few bomb on base premises which exploded inside the perimeter.

Meanwhile pro LTTE Tamil net reports, this is the first time the Tigers have combined both air and ground attack in a raid.

Exact damage caused by the attack has not been assessed yet. However Tiger units that entered the airbase have so far destroyed two MI-24 Helicopter Gunships, Sri Lanka's only Beach Craft and one K-8 Trainer Jet. Another Bell-212 Helicopter transporting reinforcements crashed at Mihintale. The airbase is situated in Anuradhapura Town. Two Tamil Ealam aircraft dropped three bombs on the base and left unharmed.

The attack was a Commando style raid involving a small unit of fighters that had entered the base from Nurawa Wewa area, according to sources. Sri Lanka Air Firce's Number 10 Fighter Squadron made a retaliatory bombing around 5am. Damages caused to the LTTE in this raid is unknown.
