International Conference on Countering Terrorism opens in Sri Lanka

(October, 18, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Sri Lanka's government opened an international conference on countering terrorism on Today evening around 6.00 pm at BMICH.Top level Diplomatic delegations, Ministers and high level government officials, Journalists and military officials were attended to the opening ceremony.

Opening the conference, Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama told delegates that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), who have been fighting for an independent homeland since 1983, have connections with armed groups around the world.

"One must be conscious that helping combat the LTTE, foreign governments are not only helping Sri Lanka but also acting on their own self interest," Bogollagama said.

According to Bogollagama, “one must be conscious that in taking action against the LTTE foreign governments are not merely helping Sri Lanka, but they are also acting in their self-interest, for it is well known that the LTTE’s global terror net work which has links to other terrorist organisations such as United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA), the Afghan Mujhideen, the Kurdish Wokers Party (PKK), the Maoists , Abu Sayaf, Moro National Liberation Front, and to the Al-Queda, has ability to contribute to copy –cat terrorism though its suicide bombing technology, acts of maritime terrorism, and nascent air strike capability.”
