C4 Explosives Recovered in Colombo

(January, 15, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Sri Lankan Naval troops on foot patrol detected 8.75 kilograms of lethal C 4 explosives with two 82/2 type hand grenades in Modara, Colombo yesterday (14th January 2008) around 6.00 p.m.

The parcels of C 4 explosives and the hand grenades were recovered on the beach near the Kali Amman Kovil at Modara by the naval personnel on the information provided by the vigilant civilians. There were two parcels of ten (10) C 4 explosive slabs, each parcel having five (05) 500-gram slabs of C 4 explosives and another parcel of C 4 explosives with steel balls weighing 3.75 kilograms. Two (02) 82/2 type hand grenades were also recovered by the naval personnel along with the C 4 explosives.

An immediate cordon and search operation in the area was carried out by the Navy with the assistance of the Modara Police and the explosive parcels were cleared by the Navy’s Bomb Disposal Team averting a major human tragedy. If not for the vigilance of the naval troops on patrol, a large number of civilians would have fallen victim and lose their precious lives.
