Idiot Australians Attacked on Our Murali

(February 3, Melbourne, Australia, Sri Lanka Guardian) Muttiah Muralitharan is in the news for being the victim of an “egg attack”. Muralitharan, the world record holder in terms of Test wickets, has a long history of animosity when it comes to Australia and the latest example to emerge was when an egg, and abuse, was thrown at him and two others from Sri Lanka in Hobart.

According to reports, Sri Lankan team manager Shriyan Samararatne confirmed the incident occurred on Thursday night and said the missile had hit a Sri Lankan selector, denying reports that the egg had actually struck Murali on the face.

“A group of four was walking from a restaurant to the team hotel and an egg was thrown at them from a car, but I am not sure if they recognised Murali,” Samararatne was quoted as saying. “I don’t know the exact motive. I doubt whether they recognised Murali but, unfortunately, he was there. We told Cricket Australia about it and they were very upset.” Another source suggested that the bowler, a national selector and a member of the team’s support staff were walking on a Hobart street when the “attack” occurred. The missile hit the selector and the team management later lodged a complaint with the local police, the source added.

The Lankan manager said because the vehicle from which the egg was thrown was travelling at speed, and because it was dark, it was difficult to say for sure that Murali had been the target. Murali has had his share of issues in Australia in the past, having been called for chucking, and heckled as a result by local crowds. In 1995-96, then skipper Arjuna Ranatunga threatened a walkout if his bowler’s “persecution” by the umpires continued. Murali has been regularly jeered by crowds around Australia ever since. In Friday’s Twenty20 International at the MCG here, India were the near-constant target of boos from the 85,000-strong crowd and Harbhajan was in particular picked on.
