More than 200 SLA Cadres Dead in Fighting At Muhamalai

History Repeated

(April 23, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The Sri Lanka Army's advance towards Kilali and Muhamalai LTTE FDL (originally 2nd FDL) managed in the capture of the LTTE's 1st FDL but were surprised by a heavy volume of artillery and mortar attacks launched by Tigers from LTTE areas.

The Tigers, sensing the advance retreated and direct artillery strikes at advancing troops killing170 Army soldiers while 30 others have gone missing, our reliable sources in the Area said.

Meanwhile, 376 soldiers were wounded in action. The number of Tigers killed is 52 while LTTE claims it lost only 16 fighters.

Meanwhile government official rejected the LTTE’s report on latest confrontation and says “the LTTE have also claimed the SLA lost 150 soldiers, which is not true.” Even the Main Battle Tank lost in yesterday's fighting is now believed to be a T89 MBT.

However the same thing happened on at same area in two years ago. Muhamalai remains calm after an offensive initiated by the Tigers on October 2006. Tiger cadres launched an offensive on the Security Forces forward defences in Muhamalai at the crack of dawn in 2006 following weeks of intermittent artillery shelling and mortar fire. Ground troops successfully repulsed the tiger offensive with the support of the Air Force and the Navy. The Air Force and Navy assisted the ground forces to block and destroy tiger reinforcements from Elephantpass and Kilinochchi. Air Force Kfir jets pounded tiger artillery and mortar positions behind tiger forward defences. Military field commanders state that troops are presently strengthening their positions along the FDL.

129 Army personnel sacrificed their lives while 283 were injured in the battle. The situation in Muhamalai remains relatively calm with sporadic artillery and mortar attacks by the Tigers.

THE SRI LANKAN GOVT.AT LEAST NOW RETURN BACK TO THE NEGOTIATION TABLE WITH THE LTTE AND FIND A LASTING PEACE FOR THE ETHNIC CONFLICT WHICH LEFT SCORES OF SRI LANKANS DEAD OR SERIOUSLY WOUNDED.

SRI LANKA IS THE ONLY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD WHICH BOMBARD ITS OWN CITIZENS, CAUSING DEATHS, SUFFERING AND DISTRUCTION.
