(April 17, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) ‘Tie a wire around your neck and jump from a high height. Your momentum will cause you to be decapitated before you hit bottom’, says one entry in a website.

As anyone whose online surfing has ever gone astray will know, there is a great deal of vile, venal material on the web. Shockingly, there is now a profusion of ‘pro-suicide’ websites, offering morbid advice on how to take out your life.

In these dedicated suicidal sites people actually seek advice from ‘suicide experts’. The surfers here seem to have a perverse interest in discussing suicide methods and their bloody impact on the human body in graphic, salacious detail.

These sites are modern meeting places for the depressed and the deranged who make tough choices. The shocking thing about these sick sites are scary in terms of their tone and outlook.

A study abroad has found that almost half of the sites searched by people for information on how to commit suicide contained examples of how to take one’s life.

These dedicated suicide sites discusses suicide methods, suicide-sure methods, most effective methods of suicide, methods of suicide, ways to commit suicide, how to commit suicide, how to kill yourself, easy suicide methods, best suicide methods, pain-free suicide and quick suicide.

Commenting on this issue Cyber Crime Assistant Commissioner Sudhakar said ‘we cannot block the websites, as most of these are designed by people from abroad and the server would be obviously located there’.

It is an issue of common concern which should be addressed by international forums. One country cannot act in isolation to stop this.
