Red alert in Tamil Nadu

(May 14, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) A security blanket has been spread across the State in the light of the Jaipur serial bomb blasts, which have killed 63 persons.

In Chennai alone as many as 18,000 police personnel have been deployed for security purpose and all the vantage locations have been fortified.

Director General of Police K P Jain has ordered all Superintendents of Police to get into alert mode across state.

Vigil has been stepped up in important places like temples, bus stops and railway station, where people ther in large number.

According to a top police official ‘police force including Swift Action Group, striking force, commando Force and Rapid Action Group are put into action at sensitive places all over Tamilnadu’.

All border checkposts have been alerted and vehicle checks have also been ordered at night. A special high alert has been circulated to all the district police head quarters to ensure security and special teams are deployed to monitor the activities all over the state, he added.

Further all express trains and suburban trains are being escorted with armed personnel. Bomb squads and sniffer dogs are pressed into service round the clock at vantage points. Further vendors are prohibited from entering into suburban trains at both Central and Egmore stations.

Continuous announcements are being made to the passengers at the railway stations not to touch any unknown baggage, if found unattended.

Joint Commissioner of police (North) N Ravi said ‘In Chennai city too we have deployed sufficient police force at places like Chennai Moffusil bus terminus, Central Railway Station, Airport and places where public gather.

Major entry points in city were being strictly monitored and continuous vehicle checks at night had been ordered. More policemen are deployed in commercial hubs like T Nagar and Parrys, he said.
