Removal from UNHRC is a signal

by Mano Ganesan

(May 24, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Prevention of Sri Lanka from the UNHRC is a message signaling the state to behave itself. This is from the international community. This was to come for some time now and it has finally come. This is not any conspiracy but a signal.

Sri Lanka may blame the UN for partiality and double standards between the Sri Lankan situation and the US allied activity in Afghan and Iraq. US allied actions are between two or more nations. They are very much complicated within the international power politics. Our issue is where members of minority community are forced to face the blunt human rights violations and the immense culture of impunity. Iraq and Sri Lanka are not same and equal.

On the other hand Government cannot blame the international community taking the side of LTTE. International community did not give this signal to the government without any considerations for LTTE. Fact remains that the international community has long before taken all the actions against the LTTE. It is a banned organization in Americas, EU, Australia and in India. The rebel fund raising and arms purchasing activities are monitored and crippled. Bank accounts and alleged front offices are being sealed and closed down. Entry visas to their countries are denied to LTTE members and functionaries. Numerous activists are under arrest and investigation. It is very reasonable to assume that the international community had done more than enough against LTTE in the recent past. They are the signals to the LTTE pushing it towards good behavior. When they took action against LTTE, it was welcomed by the government.

On the contrary, there is a solid school of thought among the Tamil community that the international community is not doing enough to improve the human rights conditions and political moves here. Tamil thinking is that the west and India have failed to stop the waves of killings and abductions. Many believe that India supports the government positions on both human rights and political fronts. And it is intentionally permitting Pakistan to support the war machine and while the west just looking the other way.

It is now the turn of the government in very small manner. Here too the international community did not treat the government and LTTE in par. This nominal signal against the government has come very much later because this is a state. But the government cannot expect the international community to give a blank cheque to it simply because it is a government. There is a code of conduct for governance. This government has failed to behave itself as a legitimate elected government. It has failed to understand that it represents Sri Lankan state in the world community of nations. It failed to adhere to the international conventions. This is a very small measure taken by the world body towards Sri Lanka. It is now for the government to listen or leave it.

THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY HAS GIVEN ITS VERDICT, EVEN INDIA OUR GREATEST NEIGHBOUR COULD NOT HELP SRI LANKA TO SECURE A PLACE IN THE UNITED NATIONS HUMAN RIGHTS COMMITTEE(UNHRC)
