“This is a Govt. which has more to conceal than reveal for elections”

(May 06, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Addressing the Media today ( 6 May) , Ravi Kaunanayake UNP M.P., said ,this is a Govt. which is unique ,because the more it conceals its so called ‘achievements’ , the better it is for it. From the day it was installed in power to date, its two and half year record is a chapter barren of achievements. Can it prove that it has contributed in any way towards the development of the country, solving the economic ills, alleviating the people’s hardships or made headway in the ethnic war.?

The Govt. and its Ministers have only solved problems via its pro Govt. media and deceptive mechanisms distorting facts and figures. He asserted.

Sri Lanka is experiencing the highest inflation at 29.9 % in the region. ‘Even as I am speaking, the price of Dhal has risen to Rs. 200.00 (up by 25.00) and all essential goods are shooting up, not to mention the staple food, rice, despite the fake price control.’ he lamented.

There are so many items also to go up in price .But; the Govt. has put them on hold as always, until the EP elections are over. .Already, the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation Chairman has hinted of steep price hikes in petroleum products and kerosene oil.

If the Govt.is giving the same manure subsidy as previously to the Farmers as it claims , and if the Bank of Ceylon has given loans of Rs.5 million each to 10 leading Rice Millers at concessionary 8% interest ( when the present standard rate of interest is 25% !) to enable them to sell rice at low rates, why is the Govt. allowing the rice price to shoot up to Rs. 100.00 per kilo when it is aware that, with these concessions the rice can be sold at below Rs. 40.00 per kilo ?, he asked . Obviously, like in all Govt. programs there is a serious lapse or racket in this too! He exclaimed. The Govt. brings down the price of Shell gas by Rs. 20.00 on the basis that World fuel price has declined. But, at the same time increases the Laugfs gas price by Rs. 90.00 for the same reason! What is the comedy drama this Govt. enacting? Whom is it fooling? , he asked.

Mihin Air, the Govt. budget carrier which opened big a year ago has closed quick running into a 3200 million rupee debt! -owing monies to many State Institutions. Whose money is this? Isn’t this people’s money the Govt. is playing ducks and drakes with? Isn’t it little wondered therefore that the Govt. has to heap price hikes and taxes on the people to recoup these losses. How long can this ruthless attitude of the Govt. continue making the masses pay for Govt. sins? He asked.

This Govt. has now commenced its duping the people mania in the East too .With the Provincial Council elections round the corner; it has started laying foundation stones for Development projects in the East. This is so comical that a foundation stone was placed again yesterday by the Govt. in the same place where it laid a foundation stone immediately after it came to power two and half years ago, and now, overgrown with grass and weeds instead of a superstructure, he concluded.
