Freedom is Nalini's right: Lawyer

(June 12, New Delhi, Sri Lanka Guardian) On Friday, Nalini Sriharan, a life convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, will complete exactly 17 years in Prison.

Any one of these days, her petition for premature release will come up for hearing in the Madras High Court. But what are her chances of walking free?

In an exclusive interview with the NDTV an Indian based Television Channel, her lawyer S Doraiswamy has told that freedom is her right and will not be a favour. Here we reproduced the Interview.

Q: What are her chances?

Doraiswamy: She is not looking for any clemency or favour from the government or the court. It's her right that she earned through her good behaviour for 17 years in prison.

Q: Tell us something about her stay in prison that warrants this good behaviour tag.

Doraiswamy:
She had obtained MCA degree, several certificate courses and helped many inmates to get educated.

Q: Janata Party President Dr Subramanian Swamy has opposed her release saying those who support banned outfits cannot be released.

Doraiswamy:
We are filing a reply. He has no locus standi. It is between the convict and the government. He cannot say that she is an ardent follower of any banned organisation. Even the police, the CBI and the police did not say so.

Q: Have circumstances changed after Priyanka's meeting with Nalini?

Doraiswamy:
After Priyanaka's visit, she has hope of coming out. Now nobody will say that she is supporting LTTE.

Q: On what basis?

Doraiswamy:
The fact that Priyanka visited her itself proves that she has no liking for LTTE. Otherwise the police would have alerted and not allowed Priyanka to visit her.
