The hidden agenda behind Mervyn’s liquor ban

(June 11, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Mervyn (aka Vermin) Silva is in the news again for banning liquor in his electorate for a few extra days during the Vesak week. Congratulations Vermin! Your goons and henchmen made good money during the days there was a ban on liquor as they sold a lot of kassipu and arrack at exorbitant rates.

Only the foolish masses and poor maha sangha will believe that it was an excellent piece of work initiated by Vermin to uplift society. The hard truth is that he and his merry men made good money during these days.

I can remember him saying during a TV talk show that he once told a high priest of a temple, not to ask him to follow two basic Buddhist principles all Buddhists should follow, one of which is to control carnal desires.

This man after publicly announcing such preposterous statements is trying to deceive the maha sangha and the people of the country, especially the intimidated people of Kelaniya who are scared to object to any programme of his. Outwardly he shows that it is good for the people — but always there is a hidden agenda to make his henchmen richer.

What will be the situation when all other liquor outlets which kept open on the ‘private curfew’ days of Vermin, are closed for ever? Vermin is threatening to close them — why? To get more business for the liquor shops of his supporters. Of course the big guns are silent. Vermin is doing a lot of ‘work’ — according to reports from his own people.

Now a private TV channel has taken over the task of whitewashing this man through their 7 a.m. programme which also whitewashes the other government bigwigs. Vermin was called on several occasions by the host of the show to discuss ‘this problem with media men,’ and his explanation was pathetic. We know what he did and what he is up to.

People liked to watch this programme earlier because it was an unbiased programme. But now the programme is going down the drain because it is trying to popularise the man most hated by the peace loving people of Sri Lanka.

This is Sri Lankan style politics at best. While trying to show the sangha that Dharma is forced upon the masses, one tries to gain from it. Learn Dharma, abandoned ritualistic Buddhism that politicians and sangha are forcing upon us. As long as we keep our mouths shut, both politicians and clergy use the religion to gain power and misuse it.

As a Tamil practising Buddhism wonder why Sinhalese Buddhists often insult the Maha Sangha in international media. Especially in USA and Canada Sinhala Buddhists declare war against the Maha Sangha, while doing all kind of un-Buddhist things like consuming alcohol, partying, etc. Shame on you Sinhalese Buddhists. While Sinhalese Buddhists tarnish Buddhism and its protectors, the Maha Sangha, non-Buddhists embracing Buddhism protect and promote Buddhism and Maha Sangha. Mahinda's anti-Sangha comment in his response is an ample example of anti-Sangha Sinhala Buddhist craze.

Mervin Silva should have been killed the day he met with an accident. This idiot should be shot with his own shit. I guess his life has been spared to wait and pay for the atrocities he has done. Why is the President keeping him? Who knows whether Mervin Silva knows about all the crooked things Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse uncle did to come into power such as the killings he was involved with political rivals of his early political career.
