Mass Demonstration held in Toronto against LTTE

by Hasaka Rathnamalala from Toronto

(June 22, Toronto, Sri Lanka Guardian) Hundreds of Sri Lankan Canadians gathered in Toronto today to say thanks to Canadian Government’s decision to ban World Tamil Movement (WTM), a front organization of LTTE in Canada. This demonstration reflects the anger Sri Lanka Canadians had for a long time towards illegal fund raising activities of LTTE in Canada. According to a report issued by Human Rights Watch, LTTE front organizations such as WTM use intimidation and threats to collect money from Sri Lankan Canadians for its war in Sri Lanka. Organizers say the demonstration was a huge success, which organized by the “Forum of Sri Lankan Canadians Against Terrorism” (FSCAT) a group consists with associations of different ethnic, political and religious groups with Sri Lankan origin. Such as United National Association of Canada (SLUNA), Tamil Democratic Cultural Association of Canada, JVP (Committee in Canada), Sri Lanka Freedom Party (Canada Branch), Patriotic national Movement (Canada Branch), National Freedom Front (Canada Branch) and GTA Sri Lankan students.

In its press release FSCAT said “We Sri Lankan Canadian who belong to different ethnicities and religions are gathered here today (June 21) in support of Canadian Govt’s decision to list, “WTM” as a terrorist entity. This is truly a decision entire Sri Lankan community admire with great appreciation with regards to the Govt. of Canada. Specially in reference to stopping the flow of Canadian Dollars to fund international terrorism”

One of the major reasons for the success of the event was “participation of large number of Sri Lankan Tamils join hands with Sinhala and Muslims in Toronto without any fear” Sam Rajendran the president of Tamil Democratic Cultural Association said. “This is what we want that is how we used to live in Sri Lanka”. He further said. “We are going to take this solidarity further; number one enemy of Tamil people in Sri Lanka is LTTE. It is the time Tamils to understand that; that is why we are coming out to show them that we are not afraid of intimidation anymore”. Lenin Benadict another Sri Lankan Tamil who is the spokes person for FSCAT said.

In it press release FSCAT further highlighted that “We would also like to mention that just banning, “WTM” does not completely end the fundraising capability of the LTTE as there are still large scale LTTE activities going on undetected by Canadian Authorities.”

Also keep in mind that there many NGOs collecting money using different causes and charity events. Son In order to completely halt LTTE fundraising capability, all these business and NGO’s should be thoroughly examined. We request security agencies to further co-operate with Sri Lankan Canadians who come forward to pinpoint these LTTE operation we call Canada. We once again thank Canada for taking such a justifiable action and a stance against International Terrorism and let’s keep it that way.”

I am sorry I have to agree with you since Hasaka Rathnamalala must have been educated by General Fonseka at the Institute of Fundamental Mathematics for children under the ages of two.
