Two PCs to be dissolved tonight

(June 09, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The Sabaragamuwa and North Central Provincial Councils are to be dissolved with effect from midnight today, reliable sources in the Government told the Sri Lanka Guardian short while ago. Accordingly, the date of the elections will be announced shortly.

Sources further said that Sabaragamuwa Chief Minister, Mahipala Herath and North Central Chief Minister, Berty Premalal Dissanayake had given their approval to dissolve the Provincial Councils and go for fresh elections.

In the North Central Province, the UPFA has only 13 members, while the Opposition has 19 (UNP 10, JVP 8 and SLMC 1). Anyway, the province validity period was to end on August 11 2009.

In the Sabaragamuwa Province the ruling had only 19 seats while the opposition enjoys 26 seats. Of them, the UNP has 15 members, the JVP 10 and the Ceylon Workers Congress 1. The dates for elections will be announced shortly by the Secretariat of Elections.
