War, destruction and chaos in Sri Lanka

From a Silent Sufferer

(June 25, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Millions of people in Sri Lanka as well as in other parts of the world suffer immensely due to the fury of nature that visits them in the form of tsunamis, tornadoes, floods, earthquakes etc., and we can imagine the suffering, mental agony and trauma they undergo as a result.

In Sri Lanka in addition to the 2004 tsunami and periodical floods we have a more deadly man-made disaster in the form of a racial war deliberately created by none other than our pseudo patriots who claim that they love this country more than anything, while leading thousands of young and old to their graves due to malnutrition and starvation. The result is that many of the elderly become invalids while mothers and children become widows and orphans.

The recent reports on national health have confirmed that on average 23% to 30% of expectant mothers, infants and children are malnourished and suffer from anaemia due to the lack of a proper diet. Educationists have revealed that a record number of students have failed the last O/L examination and have attributed this to the prevailing social unrest in the country.

The rate of inflation is at 30% and with the ever-increasing cost of living, mere existence has become impossible to the poor and the low and middle-income earners. To add to this, lawlessness abounds in the country with bomb blasts, murders, abductions and misappropriation of public funds especially by politicians. The amount of public funds that have gone down the drain because of ill-thought out ventures like Mihin Lanka is shocking.

Terrorism and the war against terrorism have become the 'mantra' trotted out by scheming politicians who are more interested in staying in power, come what may, to enjoy life at public expense.

Although these politicians try to fool the masses giving various excuses for the problems plaguing the country, statistics show that the expenses of ministers have increased over time and gone up sky high while the spending of the people has been very low.

All this is simply because of the heavy misuse of public funds by those in power who are feathering their nests and amassing ill-gotten wealth to last many generations without any regard for the suffering people.

Although everyone in the government is talking about eliminating terrorism, no one wants to pay heed to world opinion, that terrorism can be eliminated only if the underlying cause is eliminated. That is because they want to keep terrorism alive for their survival depends on it.

The Mahinda Chinthanaya has taken this country back to square one. In the 1950s when Tamil leaders squatted peacefully on Galle Face demanding justice for the grievances of the Tamils, the then Prime Minister Bandaranaike without giving them a hearing, ordered the Fire Brigade to aim their water jets at the protesters.

It is this kind of action by successive governments that spawned terrorism. But today the solutions offered to the Tamils are - bombings by MiG jets, attacks by Multi Barrel Rocket Launchers, indiscriminate arrests, abductions and detentions without charges. Can terrorism be eliminated this way?

A former cabinet minister was found to have millions of rupees tucked away in safe lockers in banks. Similarly others who claim to be patriots own luxury apartments and hotels in the Middle East and other world capitals. All these are funds from corrupt deals, and yet they claim to be patriots who love this country!

Those clad in saffron robes who preach peace and enunciate liberating humanity from fear and sorrow are bogged neck deep in stinking politics and advocate war which brings death and suffering. They are shamelessly insulting the Noble One who preached Maha Karuna - universal kindness - leading to the well being of every one.

The war that was deliberately created bringing death and destruction to everyone now hangs like the Sword of Damocles over the President threatening to destroy everyone, any moment.

100% spot on. If every citizen of the "great country" had the same view, we wouldn't be in this mess.

Excellent article.
