Z-score tells us a little story….

by Kumara Kaluarachchi

(June 11, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Last week, the University grants commission of Sri Lanka has issued the minimum cut off z scores for selection to various courses of study in respect of each district. I was interested in the z scores for Medicine. When I went through the minimum Z score for each district, this is what I got:

Colombo - 1.991
Matara - 1.9864
Galle - 1.9794
Kandy - 1.9071
Kurunegala - 1.9053
Kalutara - 1.8841
Jaffna - 1.8814
Hambantota - 1.8813
Kegalla - 1.8629
Ratnapura - 1.8445
Gampaha - 1.8123
Ampara - 1.8098
Vavuniya - 1.7283
Matale - 1.7241
Anuradhapura - 1.6887
Batticaloa - 1.6335
Tincomalee - 1.6175
Monaragala - 1.6123
Badulla - 1.5891
Puttalam - 1.5867
Polonnaruwa - 1.4108
Nuwaraeliya - 1.2731
Kilinochchi - 0.8233
Mulativu - 0.8039

Colombo got the highest Z score and Mulativu got the lowest. Jaffna is in the 7th place just above Hambantota.

Different people could interpret this data in different manner. I do not like to do that here in this article. All I want is you guys to look in to the data and THINK!
