Archbishop Oswald Gomis spells out the reality

The Tigers have to be wiped out if ethnic resolution is to be achieved

“The LTTE has right along had their own agenda and that was to create a mafia smuggler state in South Asia. Prabhakaran never had any other plans. He manipulated this to his advantage but lacked the vision that it could boomerang on him one day and by that time he would have extracted a horrendous price on the Tamil community.”

(July 25, Frankfurt, Sri Lanka Guardian) Sri Lankans have had enough of violence for too long a period of time and our dear homeland is tottering on misery, mayhem and anarchy. Hardly anyone except those who are able to plunder and pillage from a chaotic war situation that has become an industry by itself want lawlessness to prevail. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) ceased to be a force of the Tamils in Sri Lanka long ago. The TNA group of Members of Parliament is a traitorous band of opportunists doing the Simian Tango to the Wanni organ-grinder.

There is indeed an ethnic problem in the country and successive governments have failed the minorities continuously but just like the Tamils are being held in ransom by the Tigers the most brutal political group in the world, the majority Sinhalese people are also being gripped tightly by the most extreme racial and religious group in the world headed by shameless monks most of whom just cannot be real followers of Lord Buddha. They are an emblem of insult to Buddhism.

Please don't blame the Tamils for being force-represented by the LTTE at the pain of ruthless repercussions for the same applies to the Sinhalese community for they are being held in ransom by another kind of terror contraption.

This being the situation and the government continuing to be ineffective even if it has good intentions, a military solution has been forced on the country. This feature will not advocate a military take over at all even though successive governments have conducted themselves in a manner to encourage such as almost virtually inevitable. In 1983, the Armed Forces should have taken over the country, set up an interim government, arrested President Junius Jayewardene and put him on trial accused of having a leading hand in the well-orchestrated attempt at genocide against the Tamils. Has there ever been any doubt about it?

Despite this, there are Tamils especially from the elite many of them in their overseas homelands now, who have remained supporters and friends of Jayewardene. Among the prominent Tiger supporters in the Sri Lankan Tamil Diaspora are many who claim to have been close friends of Jayewardene and even now wax highly of him. These people hardly knew the north or east.

Speaking of the Sri Lankan Tamil Diaspora championing the cause of the LTTE, one can rightfully claim now they are hardly interested in the well being of their kith and kin on the island. Supporting the LTTE long ceased to be a political issue seeking the liberation of the Tamils from Sinhalese oppression. Their stand for the LTTE soon developed into an opportunity to amass fortunes for themselves and they have no stakes whatsoever in Sri Lanka.

While their kith and kind pay very heavy prices in Sri Lanka, they make their fortunes on their blood and the move towards extinction in Sri Lanka and their families are well provided and none of their children are at risk. While Tamil youth are press-ganged and forced to the frontiers of death and devastation, the Diaspora children are in universities and in comfortable circumstances.

If the Tamil cause is real to them, there will not be so many Diaspora organizations each advocating Tamil liberation via the Tigers in Sri Lanka and they are fighting over funds most of them collected in cash and are usually unaccounted. Currently, we are reading a great deal of material about Tamils for Justice and a counter organization called Justice for Thamils and a number of names are being revealed virtually as scoundrels who appear to have made fortunes for themselves. The only area they seem united is their advocacy of terrorism in Sri Lanka, a kind of lifeline which in the eyes of the international community that gave some credibility to the LTTE. But this has now ceased and the stripers have been exposed as against any solution to the ethnic chaos.

The LTTE has right along had their own agenda and that was to create a mafia smuggler state in South Asia. Prabhakaran never had any other plans. He manipulated this to his advantage but lacked the vision that it could boomerang on him one day and by that time he would have extracted a horrendous price on the Tamil community.

The announcement by the LTTE for a ceasefire during the SAARC conference is laughably obvious. They have had far too many reverses and are certainly on the way out. We have come to a situation where peace is not possible if the LTTE is considered as a part of that process.

The Venerable Archbishop of Colombo Oswald Gomis has with tremendous courage expressed his views in the Vatican Radio that the opportunities for a dialogue with the LTTE is basically nonexistent "as the war has reached a decisive stage and added that fighting will likely prove to be the only to end the conflict." Archbishop Gomis struck his note on the truth that has often been overlooked by many.

He pointed out that "an important distinction must be made between the insurgents who are fighting and the Tamil population ads a whole, which he says are two separate people."

"They say that the fighters are one particular terrorist group and not all the Tamils, so even the Tamils are held ransom by these people."

He stressed: "So first of all you must crush them if you want to have a peaceful solution, that's what most of the people are thinking and that has become a common opinion, not that we share it."

Prabhakaran can never be trusted because he is totally focused on his agenda and that was why he also brutally decimated some of his own lieutenants and their supporters and also destroyed other Tamil liberation groups pitilessly. He is every inch a Pol Pot if not worse. His backers overseas have given him a great deal of publicity as a Tamil liberation hero, an image that helped them to amass millions for themselves.

Archbishop Oswald Gomis has made his understanding very clear; that he was able to do this is remarkable because some of his bishops including especially the Bishop of Mannar are ardent supporters of the LTTE. In fact the Catholic Church in the north and east are generally known to have strong sympathies for the Tigers and when this terrorist gang formed in 1970s, some Catholic priests became the guardians of bank loots carried out by Prabhakaran.

The ceasefire announced by the LTTE reflects the reality that they are on the run and that is also why there are problems among the Tamil Diaspora Tiger supporters who want to make that last fast buck before the end of Prabhakaran and his horde of smugglers.

I have no problems with the article itself but the heading is a little unfair:

Archbishop Oswald Gomis spells out the reality

The Tigers have to be wiped out if ethnic resolution is to be achieved

Knowing His Grace the Archbishop I was surprised he would say something so one-sided and looked up other sources and read the article again carefully.

The Archbishop is very clear that the idea that the LTTE ought to be defeated is what some people say and that the he does not share those views.

The body of the article quotes him accurately. But the heading is wrong.

This is just not fair.

I agree with the comment. Archbishop has said that he does not share the view. However, this is what always the so-called Free Media does. Take a statement out of context and give banner headline publicity. The FFM has become a terrorist organization by itself. I hope that Sri Lanka guardian will make the correction immediately in fairness to the Archbishop though I personally disagree with his comment and the absolute silence he had when the Catholic Church very openly supported the terrorism in the North through their representatives. Even in the case of famous Madhu statue incident the catholic church played a double role. May bt save the Bishop of Mannar but that is a gross violation of the aged old classical cardinal virtue of FORTITUDE.

TP and Ranjitht,

It is good to see others are also checking the accuracy of SL media reporting.

It scares me that SLG thinks it is helping Sri Lanka through its disinformation campaign.

My biggest problems with this article are in the paragraph where the writer firstly talks about "There is indeed an ethnic problem in the country...." This person like many talks about a ethnic problem but is not explaining what is the problem or what are the Tamil problems that is not faced by the Sinhalese, Muslims and Burghers? What is this ethnic problem? This person is repeating the same tune that we have heard hundreds of times in the last fifty years without an explanation. Then he goes on to "the majority Sinhalese people are also being gripped tightly by the most extreme racial and religious group in the world headed by shameless monks....." this in my view is a stupid statement without any validity. Firstly it is not clear who these monks they are refering to, secondly it is only this person's view as it tries to compare this "groups of monks" to LTTE who has murdered many many babies, children, old men and Women etc etc. In my view this article loses its validity by this. It also does not explain what these monks have done to be labled as the most extreme racial and religious group in the world. If trying to save the Sinhala nation and the Buddhism from ruthless groups of Tamils, Christians, Muslims is a crime then so be it. There are many Tamils parties to protect Tamils, and Muslim parties to protect Muslims but how many parties are there in Sri Lanka to protect Sinhala and Buddhists. So if Tamils and Muslims can have extreme racial parties why can't Sinhala Buddhists have their own party to protect their rights? How many of you have objected to these other racially motivated parties?
