by Udara Soysa and Nilantha Illangamuwa in Jaffna

(July 30, Jaffna, Sri Lanka Guardian) This is not the usual negative story you would hear about LTTE cadres in Jaffna. This is a very unique story. This is the success story of how killer machines of LTTE had transformed themselves to productive society members through Protective Accommodation Rehabilitation Center in Jaffna. It is interesting to note that although the Army is not directly involve in the management, Army leadership in Jaffna under Maj. Gen Chandrasiri had taken much efforts to strengthen these rehabilitation efforts.

"We are very happy to be hear and we are learning a lot everyday," according to one ex- LTTE cadre.

"I left the LTTE and I surrendered to the Army sometime ago. It was a really good decision. I worked a lot in Makkal Padai activities in Jaffna during CFA. I did not like it but I was forced to do it due to LTTE threats," he added.

Another ex-LTTE cadre told that he left the LTTE because he was not looked after by the organization.

"I was injured during an LTTE operation in which I worked as a driver. But the LTTE did not do anything to support me. I was just asked to leave and told that the they do not have money to sustain me," he said.

"Thus I realized that surrendering to the Army is a good option." He added.

One more ex- LTTE cadre who spoke to us told that he soon want to rejoin with society.

Meanwhile, army officials who are coordinating many activities in this institute told that they are preparing passports and identity cards for these ex-LTTE cadres so they can be found employment in Sri Lanka or abroad.

"Many ex-LTTE cadres graduated from our institute and now living as responsible civilians. Of course they are under some surveillance for a while but we only have successes till now. Tamils or Sinhalese they all are Sri Lankans, we must rehabilitate these ex-LTTE cadres and make them productive individuals," said an army official who is involved in coordination process of this institute.
