Indian, American elections and the Tamil problem!

“It is certain that the Manmohan Singh government, which is in a dilemma over the Nuclear deal with America, cannot take a meaningful decision to ensure justice to the Tamil people. Nor can Sonia make up her mind on the Lankan Tamil issue. They lack a political will.”

(July 08, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The Tamil side particularly the LTTE has over and over again stressed the need for India to identify the real, fraternal forces of India and its pretentious friends. In fact, P.Nadesan, the LTTE political wing leader, referred to this fact quoting facts and figures in his interview with Kumutham, a Tamil weekly published from Tamil Nadu.

It is history that during Indo-China war and the Indo-Pakistan war, the Sinhala governments were anti India and that on all those occasions, the Lankan Tamils were fovurable to India and were supportive of the interests of India.

But, today, when the Lankan Tamils fight for their freedom, India supports the Sinhala government. It is our expectation that India must reciprocate and extend its solidarity with the freedom struggle of Tamil people - This is what Nadesan conveyed to India through Kumudam.

One wonders whether India will be receptive to this appeal from the Tamil perspectives and the LTTE. Political circles have confirmed that the Manmohan Singh government which is tottering due to internal crisis it faces can take a decisive stand.

It is certain that the Manmohan Singh government, which is in a dilemma over the Nuclear deal with America, cannot take a meaningful decision to ensure justice to the Tamil people. Nor can Sonia make up her mind on the Lankan Tamil issue. They lack a political will.

These circles are of the view that Delhi lacks the might to exert pressure on Sri Lanka on the right lines. All that it can do is to send some officials to deliver some advices.

In such a context, it is meaningless for the Lankan Tamils to expect Indian government to play a dominant role to ensure justice and fair play.

It is learnt that Bharathiya Janatha Party, which is tipped to be the party that can win the forthcoming general election in India and form the next government, has taken the following two vital decisions in respect of the Lankan issue.

To strengthen the hands of the Lankan Tamils against the Lankan forces that commit genocide against them.

To support a political solution based on federalism going beyond the ambit of the 13th amendment.

Similarly, it is also expected that the results of the presidential election in America will bring a ray of hope to the minorities.
