Lanka Jathika Estate workers Union says this Govt. totally neglected them

(July 06, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) M.S.A. Mohideen, administrative Secretary of the Lanka Jathika Estate workers union, the largest Estate workers Union of Sri Lanka also addressing the Media gathering at the UNP Media unit today (6 Jul) lambasted the Rajapakse regime for neglecting the Estate workers since his coming to power .It is only Late President J.R. Jayawardena of the UNP who introduced measures to uplift the standard of the estate workers, he said.

This Rajapakse govt. has not only hit at the stomach, it has virtually destroyed the lives and livelihood of the estate workers, he lamented. This Govt. not only is going on raising the cost of living, food prices and the poor man’s kerosene oil price, but, is also depriving them of their basic facilities, so much so that, these workers are now forced down to one square meal a day. Even their commonly used flour prices are up, as well as the Kerosene oil on which they depend, as they have no electricity, he regretted.

The Estate workers are also joining in the July 10th strike in full force to demand wage hikes which has been static for years at a meager Rs. 290.00 per day.
