National priorities come first

(July 12, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The JVP, humiliated by the defection of Wimal Weerawansa with 11 other JVP MPs, suffered yet another political blow at the hands of the Mahinda Rajapaksa administration when it failed to muster support for their party at the last provincial council election in the East.

To apply salt to the wound incurred by the JVP, the State dissolved the two Provincial Councils of Sabaragamuwa and North Central. After the formation of the National Freedom Front headed by Wimal Weerawansa, what was left of the JVP tried, along with the main opposition, the UNP, to salvage some lost pride by petitioning the Supreme Court against the dissolving of the two PCs. Here again they suffered another setback when both petitions failed to obtain leave to proceed from the Court.

With political setbacks ruling the day for the JVP, they decide another ploy – trade union action. This was at a critical time when the state was determined to decimate the LTTE with a string of victories at the battlefront. Even public ratings approved the state’s endeavour in this respect. However, Lal Kantha and the JVP decided to bring the economy to a standstill on the July10.

That is where they jumped the gun for the first time. Not coming to terms with the way the general public views the success of the present government’s genuine effort to crush the LTTE to bring about a conducive environment to resolve the National Question politically, the JVP and its MP, Lal Kantha, sought to disrupt state machinery and civil life.

Not stopping there, the JVP trade union heavyweight even put his seat in the Parliament on the line saying he would vacate it if the government was able to run the transport service as usual on July 10.

The general public, who have seen through the gimmicks of the JVP and the opportunistic UNP, aided by the LTTE proxy TNA, decided otherwise.

The intelligent public and the wise activists of other unions saw through the ruse. With the vast majority of the working class, they rendered the bomb designed by the JVP-UNP-TNA a damp squib.

Lal Kantha, the JVP and other of their ilk should realise that there are national priorities and perspectives to any issue at a given moment.

Pessimistic lalkanta and Jvp wanted to paralyzed the government harassing the public. But they must understand people are not polish like them. Now people living in Srilanka already realize the current situation. President doing very good job to eradicate terrorist. But lalkantha and Jvpians felt jealousy over Government. "Lankantha see what did weerawransa .If you want to be hero among the MAHAJANATAWA (people), don’t do canal job ,do-support the government.
