SAARC in Colombo

by T.T.Ilankaimannan

July, 01, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian: SAARC is not a time wasting club to Heads of the Member States. It evolves slowly than expected because of the serious differences still exist between India and Pakistan. After setting the mission and acceptance of this mission by the member countries the countries should have jointly injected the speed to achieve the goals it sets to achieve. The slow progress is the fault of the leaders of these member nations.

Hope they will realise this drawback.

This year Colombo's turn is to organise this conference and set un agenda to speed the integration of these nations and its people. Sri Lanka is a human rights violator not willing to recognise the fundamental rights of its own people, the Tamils. Its determination to solve the Tamils problem by war is against all the norms and ideals set by SAARC. I wonder how could the Leaders of these member nations prepared to attend the Conference when there is a serious civil war in existence for over 30 years because of the Sri Lanka's Government's arrogant pursuit of not recognising the rights of its own people is also the cause for all calamities taking place in the country.

I do believe the Nation's Heads have a responsibility to protect the Tamils life and dignity because they are citizen of the SAARC. I do hope that they will take principle stand and force the Singala chauvinistic leadership to recognise the Right of Self Determination of the Tamils by holding a referendum. We don't want to see the leaders enjoy wine and dine and leave Sri Lanka to live or die. Because it is miserably a failed nation incapable of solving its own economic, social and political problems by its own for the last 60 years. They need advice, help and hard push to recognise and realise the rights of the people and take constitutional changes of accommodation sooner than later.

This SAARC nation is a Human Rights violator, practising Ethnic Cleansing as a policy and a determined goal. A nation qualified to be taken to World Human Rights Court in Hague. A nation and its leaders are punishable under International Law. A corrupt nation can't feed its own people but spend billions on purchasing arms to kill its own citizen.

SAARC is not proud of this nation and its practices. If the leaders can't have influence over these atrocities and stop this state terrorism, is there any purpose of wasting tax payers money of these nations to gather to have personal merry time.

We are as citizen of SAARC waiting to see what you all are up to. SAARC's evolution as a responsible institution is a question now. If you, the leaders of these nations can't make it work sensitively let some responsible citizen to lead these nations and solve the problems of the people.
