Sri Lanka denies Singh security plans

(July 12, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardain) Sri Lanka has dismissed reports that a large number of Indian troops will protect Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh when he attends the SAARC summit in Colombo.

'It is not true that a big contingent of Indian army would be coming to Colombo,' senior minister Nimal Siripala told Parliament in Colombo Friday.

The clarification follows reports that President Mahinda Rajapakse had approved a large Indian army contingent to protect Singh during the summit on August 2 and 3.

The issue first came up on Wednesday when the Marxist JVP party member Bimal Ratnayaka sought to know whether 1500 Indian soldiers had already come to Sri lanka to provide security to Singh during the SAARC summit.
