Fatal killing ‘was racist’ say friends

Nilantham Mourddi was stabbed in the neck by a white man who got out of a minicab and hurled abuse at him before returning later kill him.

Amir Butt,23, who was with his 17 year old Sri Lankan friend when the murder took place in Croydon, South London, said the killer shouted racist insults prior to the attack.

‘He was in the car park of the restaurant when a minicab pulled up and there was a guy in the back who was really drunk and started shouting ‘you f*****g Paki”,’ said Mr Butt.

‘Our friends were there and said ‘look, mate, we don’t want any problems-just g away because you’ew being racist.’

Nilanthan had recently given up studying for A-levels at Bromley College to work as a waiter at the family’s restaurant in nearby Purley. Police are anxious to trace the minicab driver who dropped the man off near the murder scene at about 1am on Sunday.

Det Chief Insp Tim Grattan-Kane said: ‘Given the suspect returned about 30 minutes after the exchange of words, it is highly likely he lives locally. The driver has not come forward yet and it is vitally important we hear from him.

Officers are looking for a white man in his late 20s or early 30s, about 1.70m (5ft 7in) tall and of medium to stocky built. A 31 year-old man arrested on Saturday was released on bail,
