Police fails to act as Sirasa crew gets assaulted


(August 04, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Policeman watched on as a Sirasa Correspondent and Video Cameramen were manhandled and the camera equipment were damaged at the opening ceremony of the second phase of the flyover at Peliyagoda by Labour Minister “Dr” Mervyn Silva and his supporters Monday evening.

The Sirasa crew had arrived their on invitation by the Media Secretary of the Labour Minister, but the minister and his supporters assaulted them and removed their camera equipment which is estimated to be over Rs. 2 million.

Eyewitnesses said that policemen deployed for the opening ceremony watched on without intervening to prevent the assault.

The crew members lodged a complaint at the Peliyagoda police station later.
