Retrieve Katchativu - WTC’s Madurai Resolution


(August 19, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) Ulaga Tamilar Peramaipuu – the World Tamil Confederation held the World Tamil Writers Conference last Saturday (16 08 2008) at Madurai, in Tamil Nadu. The Conference was held to commemorate the sixth year completion of WTC. P. Nedumaran, President of the WTC presided.

Sri Lankan parliamentarians from the Tamil National Alliance Mavai Senathirajah , Sivajilingham, well known Tamil Poet Kasi Anandan and several prominent Tamil activists from Tamil Nadu and from the Tamil Diaspora participated in the conference.

At the conclusion of the conference, it was unanimously resolved, that Indian Government must retrieve Katchativu from Sri Lanka immediately.

In the last 25 years, Sinhalese Navy has shot and killed more than 400 Tamil Nadu fishermen within India’s territorial waters. Many hundred crores rupees worth of fishing vessels, gears and nets of Tamil Nadu fishermen were destroyed by the Sinhalese Government’s Navy. The conference urged that Indian Government must come forward to obtain from the Sinhalese Government adequate compensations for those killed as well as to the vessels and nets that has been destroyed.

The Conference also demanded granting of Indian citizenship to the Sri Lankan Tamil refugees languishing in Tamil Nadu for the last 25 years.

The UNHCR should be entrusted with the responsibility to look after the welfare of Sri Lankan Tamil refugees in the Tamil Nadu, the Conference pleaded in the resolution which was passed unanimously.
