Budget 2009, a boon for politicos and a bane for people?

(September 02, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) According to a Senior Parliamentary source, Ministers and Parliamentarians are in for a windfall at the next budget – the Govt. has undertaken to increase their salaries along with those of the judicial service.

Chairman of salaries and cadres commission said, the proposal to increase the salaries and allowances of the of Judicial officers has already been conveyed to the Supreme Court.

Under a resolution passed in parliament in 2006, salaries and allowances revisions of Parliamentarians will be made on par with those of the judicial service whenever there is a revision. This resolution has given the Govt. the much longed for leverage to increase their own salaries.

It is significant to note that when the workers’ unions struck work for their salary increases recently, the Govt. rejected their demands.
