“Media partly to blame for popular culture”

(September 04, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Government minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama says the media is partly to blame for promoting the popular culture that has eaten up all other cultures in the country.

He was speaking at a book launch at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute in Colombo last Monday afternoon (Sept. 02nd).

On the occasion, Karunaratne Paranawithana, a former Director General of the state-run Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation, launched his "Politics of the Fourth Estate."

Also speaking here, Prof. Carlo Fonseka pointed out that even the media was incapable of freeing itself from politicization.

The state media takes the line of the party in power and certain private media tags along for personal gains, while others without such advantage try to prop up a party of its choice, he said.
