Continuing robberies in Jaffna town!

– Virakesari Editorial

(September 04, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) People of the north, who undergo a number of miseries, are now unable to live peacefully in their own homes. The reason is that robbers forcibly enter houses at nights and commit robberies.

Recently, at Kannathity lane in the Jaffan town, a gang of 6 robbers, who entered a house, attacked and even cut the inmates with swords and committed a robbery of jewellery worth four hundred thousand rupees.

This act in the heart of Jaffna town, where there is patrolling by troops throughout 24 hours throughout the day has caused panic among the town dwellers.

Earlier, too, there were such robberies even during curfew hours and the inmates of the houses were attacked. Later, following steps undertaken by the police, such robberies subsided. Yet, they have once again begun as a challenge to the security forces.

Meanwhile, there have been killings and abductions in recent times. Two youths were shot to dead near the Jaffna Kachcheri last Sunday. As to, who shot them, and the reason for their killings are still a mystery.

Those who are responsible for security must create an atmosphere conducive for the people to live in peace. Otherwise, people will lose faith in security arrangements.
