Nothing alarming about LTTE activities in TN: DGP

(September 24, Madurai, Sri Lanka Guardian) Refuting allegations of spurt in LTTE activities in Tamil Nadu, state police chief K P Jain today said there was nothing alarming about the activities of Sri Lankan Tamil militants in the state.

"There is nothing alarming (about the movement of LTTE) in Tamil Nadu," the Director General of Police told the press here.

The DGP said, even in cases of smuggling of contraband by the Lankan militants, police acted swiftly and seized the items. Those involved in the smuggling were refugees, who were not closely monitored.

"If we arrest any person from the general refugee camp being involved in nefarious activities, they are put in special camps," he said.

Jain also denied that the state was facing any specific threat from terrorists. The state police had detected a terrorist module functioning from Tirunelveli. "We are closely monitoring the places of worship, public places and shopping malls." The Intelligence wing of the state police was also being strengthened, the police chief said adding recommendations of the Police Commission were being implemented.

Besides, the Director General of Police Committee had also made several recommendations for improving the intelligence mechanism, he added. - Agencies
