Alleviate the sufferings of the affected people

– Virakesari Editorial

(October 03, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Killinochchi has become a war zone as a result of air raids, shell attacks and the on going war. People are in fear and many are fleeing from killinochchi since the war has been intensified in the area.

Meanwhile, it is stressed by many quarters that civilians in the area should be protected. It can be seen that as a result of the attacks babies, children, elders and others are affected without any age differences.

People are in a dilemma without knowing where to go for safety and security following the ensuing war. They live in fear and they wonder as to how they can protect themselves from shell attacks and air raids. They feel helpless.

Government Agent Vethanayagan has said that the plight of the internally displaced people is worsening and shelter facilities need to be provided to them before the seasonal rain. IDPs live without basic facilities and many problems.

According to the Commissioner General of Essential Services, it is proposed to send essential food commodities in 60 lorries and that all necessary steps have been taken. These are salutary moves. It is also said that World Food Programme’ relief is also to be dispatched to the affected people.

The relevant authorities should take appropriate steps to full fill the food and medical needs of the IDPs. People of Vanni also want peace. But, unfortunately they are affected by the ensuing war. All quarters should contribute to alleviate the sufferings of these people.
