Vaiko leaves the floor for partner


(December 12, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guaradian) Alleging that the ruling DMK was planning to instigate violence in the by-poll to be held for Thirconstituency, MDMK general secretary Vaiko today said his party would work for the AIADMK’s victory in the election for the vacant post, which rose owing to the death of MDMK MLA Veera Elavarasan last month.

In a statement here after meeting his alliance partner J Jayalalithaa at her residence yesterday, Vaiko said the DMK would certainly face defeat in the election, and hence it was planning to instigate violence with the help of those at the helm of affairs.

‘The MDMK has decided to support the candidate of the AIADMK in the by-election,’ he said.
The Election Commission on Thursday announced by-election to the Thirumangalam Assembly constituency in Madurai district on 9 January.

According to the Commission, in fixing the election date, it had taken into consideration factors such as requirement of Central forces, festivities etc.

The notification will be issued on 15 December. The last date for filing nominations will be 22 December. Scrutiny will be held the following day. The last date for withdrawal of nominations will be 26 December. Counting of votes will be taken up on 12 January. The date of completion of the process is 15 January.

According to the Commission, electoral rolls in the constituency have been revised, with 1 January, 2008 as the qualifying date, as per earlier delimitation orders.

It has decided to use electronic voting machines (EVMs) for the by-election in all polling stations. Adequate number of EVMs has been made available. Steps have been taken to ensure that the poll is conducted smoothly.

In consonance with the past practice, the Commission has decided that voter identification shall be mandatory at the time of poll.

In order to ensure that no voter is deprived of their franchise, if their name figures in the electoral rolls, separate instructions will be issued to allow additional documents for identification.

The Model Code of Conduct will come into force with immediate effect and continue till completion of the by-election in the district in which the whole or any part of the Assembly constituency is included.

The code will be applicable to all candidates, political parties and the State and Union government as far as the State is concerned.
