TNA calls for shut down in North, East on Friday

(January 29, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Tamil National Alliance (TNA) called upon the people in the North and East of Sri Lanka to observe a general shut down on Friday (January 30) to protest against the killing of Tamil civilians by Sri Lanka armed forces.

“We seek the solidarity and support of the people in the Tamil Homeland to close all schools, offices, shops and transport services on Friday”, the TNA said in an appeal made to people of north and east.

Full text of the appeal follows:

More than 800 have been killed and more than a thousand of them injured in the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) artillery barrage and Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) bombings on the innocent Tamils civilians who had sought shelter in the very ‘safe zone’ declared by the government.

There are not enough medicine to treat the injured and the incessant shelling and bombing do not even allow the dead to be buried decently or to conduct their funeral.

Tamil National Alliance kindly requests the people in the Tamil Homeland of North and East to observe the Friday shut down in remembrance of the dead, to send live saving medicine to the injured and to urge the government to stop the shelling and bombing on innocent Tamils.

We seek the solidarity and support of the people in the Tamil Homeland to close all schools, offices, shops and transport services on Friday.
