No peace talks

By Nalin de Silva

(February 25, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Why should India all of a sudden get interested in so called peace talks between the government and the LTTE? Is it to appease Tamil Nadu where lawyers, actors, politicians and other middle class elements get together to agitate on behalf of the trapped personnel in Mulativu? If Tamil Nadu intellectuals are genuine and if they believe what they have said, then next time some terrorists hijack an Indian plane, let these humanitarians get together in Chennai to organise a demonstration demanding that the Indian government talks with the terrorists.

Instead of demanding that the Sri Lankan government commences peace talks with the LTTE, any humanitarian should help the government to liberate the innocent Tamil people forcefully held in Mulativu by the LTTE. If one argues that the people are there on their own having decided to stay back then they have to be considered at least as supporters of the LTTE, and there is nothing that the government can do for them. Even if the armed forces take all the precautions and liberate them they may not come with the forces. The trapped people appear to be more loyal to the LTTE, if we go by the words of the latter and the various statements by the pundits in the NGO industry and by other pundits.

There should be no talks with the LTTE for the simple reason that it is the terrorist organisation that keep the trapped people in misery, assuming of course that they are not LTTE supporters who have decided to stay on their own. India is clearly backing so called peace talks in order to pacify the Tamil Nadu supporters of the LTTE.

The fact that it is only in Tamil Nadu that this type of demonstrations goes onto strengthen the argument that the Tamils in Jaffna and other parts of Sri Lanka are of recent origin. The Tamils in Tamil Nadu still get agitated when they think the Tamils in Sri Lanka are grieved by the so called Sinhala government. When Sinhala people are affected nobody, not even those from Orissa (Kalinga) or West Bengal (Vanga) are concerned though it is said by some people that the Sinhalas came to Sri Lanka from these parts of Dambadiva.

The kinship between the Tamils in Tamil Nadu and those in Sri Lanka is still remembered and it is not difficult to organize Tamils in Tamil Nadu when there are so called injustices to the Tamils in Sri Lanka. The Tamils in Tamil Nadu unfortunately are not aware that the Tamils in Mulativu suffer under the LTTE and not due to some acts of the so called Sinhala government.

Why cannot the Indian government explain to the Tamils in Tamil Nadu that it is the LTTE that keeps these innocent people in Mulativu without allowing them to move out of the area? Is India working according to some hidden agenda? India knows very well that this government would not take any step that would be a threat to her security. It is different from the government of JR Jayawardhane that joined hands with the west against India. Even in that situation it was wrong for India to take action against Sri Lanka by training the Tamil terrorists in some parts of the country. However, India had to pay the supreme price for training the LTTE when Prabhakaran decided to kill Rajiv Gandhi.

As many have said what the LTTE wants is a breathing space. If India is to provide that she will have to face the consequences not in the distant future as Prabhakaran is not a person who would be grateful to anybody who does any favour to him. He wants an Eelam and perhaps a greater Eelam including the Tamil Nadu. If the present Brahmins in RAW and the foreign service want to use the LTTE to teach a lesson to the Sinhala people who protected Buddhism after the ancient Brahmins were successful in wiping out Buddhism, then they are mistaken.

Neither the politics of Prabhakaran nor Tamil Nadu politics are governed by Hindu chinthanaya as the Christian evangelists are a powerful force behind Tamil politics in both countries. The Brahmins will only lose in the final struggle against the evangelists by trying to give a breathing space for the LTTE. There are Tamils in Sri Lanka who are known to me who know how the Christian evangelists manipulate Tamil Nadu politics. The Brahmins may have an axe to grind against the Sinhala Buddhists but the ultimate losers will be themselves.

It is up to the Sri Lankan government to stand up to all the pressure exerted by the Brahmins as well as the westerners and continue with the humanitarian operations with a big no to any suggestion of peace talks. The LTTE and their allies would not stop and fight to the last as they know that they would never get another opportunity. The government may be under the impression that the last air crafts of the LTTE were destroyed on Friday night. However, if Prabhakaran has already escaped there is a possibility of more air attacks from aircrafts that take off from air craft carriers in sea. We do not know how many LTTE air crafts took off from Vanni and how many from air craft carriers. Nothing can be ruled out as the LTTE is sponsored by the west and the Brahmins even if the Indian government is playing a neutral role.

There is no time to relax and even after the defeat of the LTTE in Mulativu the government and the armed forces will have to be vigilant against the peace brigade as well as other brigades. It is the last struggle not only for the LTTE but for many others who support them as well. The people should be told the truth and should be prepared to face any eventuality. Peace can be achieved only after defeating all these forces, and the people in the Vayamba and Central Provinces have given a mandate to the government, which the other Provinces also endorse, to finish off the menace once and for all.
