Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Karunanidhi is heartless says Tamil diaspora

(February 13, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Muthuvelu Karunanidhi is accused by many non-LTTE supportive diaspora Tamils of heartless in his dealing on the sufferings of the Tamil civilian population in the war torn northern Sri Lanka.
His approach to the crisis facing the Tamil civilian population in the hands of the LTTE and army is said to be very insensitive and callous.

Quoting the Chief Minister’s non committal stance on the invitation by the President of Sri Lanka to visit the conflict zone, the Chief Minister Karunanidhi is accused of unfeeling to an open offer given by the President of Sri Lanka Mahinda Rajapakse.

At the time when Sri Lanka is curtailing all the avenues for the media and international NGO’s that could tell the grave situation facing the Tamil civilian population, the President of Sri Lanka has given an unconditional offer to the Tamil Chief Minister to visit Vanni. This has not been responded positively to garner the true facts about the situation in Vanni.

According to news reaching from eastern Sri Lanka, the government authorities has declined the request of the Eastern Province Chief Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan to visit the refugee reception centres for the escapees from the fighting to personally handover relief goods. The government refusal comes at the time when pressures are being put on the Chief Minister of Eastern Province to handover the 244 injured Tamil civilians to the army to be transferred from Vanni to Trincomalee. These injured were brought by the ICRC few days ago under considerable difficulties. The government is said to be wanting these injured Tamils to be retuned to the recent army held areas.

Sources in the East confirm that Eastern Province Chief Minister has been put under pressure by the concerned Tamils there to prevent the injured being sent back to the north. A tug a war is said to be taking place between the government officials and the Chief Minister on this issue.

A concerned source in anonymity said ‘if this is the predicament faced by the Chief Minister of Eastern Province, how could the government give such an open invitation to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu to have uncontrolled access to the people in the fighting area?’

There is wide spread concerns that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister failed to make political mileage by accepting the offer of the Sri Lankan President to visit the conflict zone.

The Chief Minister Karunanithy had never visited Sri Lanka even on a private visit to this date.
