Jaya lashes out at MK

Chennai Bureau

(March 13, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa today accused Chief Minister M Karunanidhi of conspiring to prevent funds collected during the recent hunger strike in support of the Sri Lankan Tamils from the reaching them.

In a press statement here, she referred to the remark of Chief Minister M Karunanidhi that no individual or organisation could approach the Red Cross for distribution of aid abroad without the Central government’s permission.

Stating that she had overcome several such obstacles earlier, Jayalalithaa reiterated that the funds would reach the Tamils in Sri Lanka.

Pointing out that she had announced the hunger strike on 5 March itself, the AIADMK supremo wanted to know if it was possible to make arrangements to send medicines and equipment to Sri Lanka in a day.

Jayalalithaa said Karunanidhi’s intentions were clear and lashed out at the Chief Minister for ridiculing her statement during the recent hunger strike on the Lankan Tamils issue while he was enacting dramas as if to show concerns for the Tamils in the neighbouring country.

In this regard, she said organising all-party meets, resignation of MPs, human chain protest, telegrams to Prime Minister and resolution in the Assembly were nothing but gimmicks.

The AIADMK general secretary said Karunanidhi had no right to criticise her as he had remained a mute spectator when the Centre sent military aid to the island nation and provided training to the Lankan Army in India.
