Lankan family perishes in car-lorry smash

(April 08, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) A Sri Lankan couple and their son were killed and three others sustained serious injuries when the car in which they were travelling rammed into a parked lorry at Achrapakkam last night.

The deceased were identified as Anton Kamal (45), his wife Anton Fathima and their son Anton Duvindo. According to reports, the accident took place when they were proceeding to Ooty in a tourist car from Chennai.

The couple, who had recently come from Sri Lanka on a tourist trip, had booked a tourist cab and took their relative Decremalli, their daughter Anto Kusan and their son Anton Duvindo to Ooty. When the vehicle had reached Achrapakkam, the driver lost control of the vehicle and rammed the car into a parked lorry. Follwing this the couple and their son were killed on the spot.

Anto Kusan, Decremalli and the driver sustained serious injuries and were taken to Chengalpet Government hospital. Police have registered a case and investigations are on.

Tea shop looted

Burglars broke into a tea shop at Tondiarpet in north Chennai and took away Rs 3,000 in cash, police said. The robbery came to light this morning when the tea shopowner Mohin found his cash kept in the drawer missing. Apart from the cash, an LPG cylinder and cigarettes kept for sale were missing. Tondiarpet police are investigating.
