(April 27, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) Describing the banned LTTE as a liberation movement fighting for the rights of 15 lakh Lankan Tamils, PMK founder Dr S Ramadoss on Sunday said LTTE Chief V Prabhakaran was not a terrorist.
Addressing a press conference here, he said ‘Prabhakaran is not a terrorist’. ‘The LTTE is a liberation movement fighting for the rights of 15 lakh Lankan Tamils. It is not a terrorist organisation’, he added.
Recalling the liberation movements launched by leaders like Netaji Subash Chandra Bose, South African leader Nelson Mandela and Palestinian leader Yasar Arafat, Ramadoss said once these leaders were also branded as terrorists by the British.
‘However they were later hailed as liebration leaders’, he added. ‘It’s not true’, was Dr Ramadoss’ reply, when asked about the LTTE, which started as a liberation movement, had turned into a militant outfit as it had killed several Sinhala and Tamil leaders.
‘Prabhakaran is 53 years old. He will fight for another 20 years’, the PMK chief said. Stating that the Tamils were fighting for their rights right from the day Sri Lanka gained independence, he said separate Tamil Eelam was the only solution to the ethnic crisis.
‘There should be a separate country like East Timor’, he said. He said the demand for a Separate Eelam has gained momentum with AIADMK too, joining the bandwagon. ‘AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa has said that Eelam was the only solution. I welcome her statement...It has strengthened the cause now’.
Accusing the Indian government of orchestrating the war against Tamils in Sri Lanka by supplying arms and other items, Ramadoss described as a ‘drama’, the recent visit of National Security Advisor M K Narayanan and Foreign Secretary Shiv Shankar Menon to Colombo.
‘But Tamilnadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and Union Home Minister P Chidambaram had been claiming that the issue of ceasefire did figured in the talks and that he was happy about it’, he added. ‘By making such remarks, Mr Karunanidhi was trying to cheat the people with an eye on the ensuing Lok Sabha polls’, he charged. -Sri Lanka Guardian
