Govt. must first invite the main Opposition party to survey and study the plight of IDPs – UNP

(May 07, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Main opposition in Sri Lanka, the UNP M.P. Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena addressing a media briefing on today ( 7 May) said the Government must first allow the main Opposition party , the UNP to visit the Wanni and other areas to do a survey. As people’s representatives in a Democratic country, it is the MPs who have the superior right to assess the situation on behalf of the people and look into the problems of the IDPs. The President and his Government by following duplicitous policies has multiplied the problems, he added.

Defense Secretary Gotabaya says the Int. community is interfering, while the President invites UN Gen.Secretary Ban Ki Moon to visit SL to do a survey.

The Government’s falsehoods are also like its policies, Dr. Jayawardena said .The Govt. says there are only about 2000 civilians trapped in the war zone, but TULF leader Anandasagaree says, there are over 10000 of them in acute suffering.

Why cant the Government permit the Opposition party, the UNP members to visit Vavuniya and Mannar IDPs. ? he asked. The Government is not allowing people’s elected representatives to solve the people’s problems, he lamented. Even they are barred from going beyond Madawachchi and visiting those in the Hospitals. This is a denial of the legitimate rights and the UNP is contemplating action against the Government’s denial of permission, he noted.
