‘Give me victory, give me solace’

(May 07, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) ‘Reach out to the voters individually. Highlight the good works done by the government. Ensure that our candidates win in all constituencies. Give me solace.’

This was the message to DMK cadres from Chief Minister and DMK supremo M Karunanidhi. The octogenarian, speaking from his hospital bed to his party channel, said lot of rumours were being spread about his health condition and appealed to party workers not to believe them.

‘I have been admitted to hospital only for fever and there need not be any concern over my health,’ he said. In an apparent bid to match AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa’s championing the Eelam cause ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, Karunanidhi said that he would spare no efforts in creating a separate homeland for Tamils in Sri Lanka.

The Chief Minister and UPA, of which DMK is a constituent, have come under increasing criticism of the opposition, particularly AIADMK, which has accused them of turning a blind eye to the plight of Tamil civilians trapped in the war zone.

‘Our government had ensured relief work among the civilians who were caught in the conflict between the Lankan Army and the rebel LTTE. As the next step, the Tamils should get their own homeland. I have assumed responsibility of taking all possible efforts to ensure that,’ he said.

Karunanidhi told his partymen to concentrate fully on the election work and not to get diverted by rumours. The Lankan Tamils’ issue came to the fore in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls in Tamilnadu after the island nation army’s offensive that confined LTTE to a small strip of land in the embattled northern parts.

The DMK leader, in a sudden move, went on an indefinite fast on 27 April demanding immediate ceasefire in the island nation but called it off within six hours after Sri Lanka reportedly announced cessation of combative operations.
