At least 160 IDPs died during first two weeks of July, HR Minsiter

(July 22, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) At least 160 Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) s living in relief centres in the north have died due to various causes including illnesses in the first two weeks of July, Minister of Human Rights Mahinda Samarasinghe told Parliament today.

The Minister made these comments replying to an adjournment motion on the plight of the IDPs introduced to by the JVP.

The Misnier said he had visit the camps earlier today and there is a vast improvement in the living conditions of the IDPs. “The numbers during in the camps is well below the dangerous levels according to internationally accepted rates for people levering in camps,” the Minister said.

He also said that there would be no free movement for IDPs until the LTTE cadres who had infiltrated the camps are filtered out.
