Government could not win the Tamil people - Mavai Senadhirajah

(August 16, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) TNA parliamentarian Mavai Senadhirajah says the results of the Jaffna Municipal Council election showed that the government could not win the votes of the Tamil people even after maximum usage of the state machinery.

The parliamentarian said that while only 18%-26% of the 100,417 registered voters exercised their franchise at the Jaffna Municipal Council election, it was a clear indication of the Tamil people’s rejection to the holding of an untimely election.

He also said that the secuirty forces attmepted to intimdiate votes to cast their votes for the Alliance government.

Senadhirajah emphasized that the 12%-26% voter turnout in the Jaffna city limits was indicative of the mental depression of the Tamil people, their fear and aversion to an election. He also said that security forces had threatened the people that they would not be allowed to continue fishing in the area if they did nt cast their votes to the Alliance government.
